Model: In-school learning opportunities (projects, activities, etc.) for all students frequently focus on content directly connected to current work in STEM-related industries
8.1 - Learning Connected to Industries
Patriots STEM Elementary provides learning opportunities for all students to connect curriculum content with current work in STEM-related industries. As a school, we use engineering themes to promote different engineering careers and topics each month. The STEM lab is organized with activities and materials that connect to the monthly engineering theme. Classes visit and explore. We also feature weekly trivia and career videos that correlate to the monthly engineering theme. Our counselors also teach guidance lessons to classes weekly that engage students in the engineering habits of mind. They also created career focused lessons for students to explore STEM careers based on their interests. They researched careers and completed grade specific career projects. This is just the beginning of the real world connections brought to life at Patriots. One of the essential core criteria of PBLs taught at Patriots is the real world connection to STEM professions and industry skills. Teachers ask students to step into the roles of STEM professionals with each PBL. Therefore, students are exposed to multiple career opportunities and real world connections to the curriculum.
The chart on the left is a summary of STEM career and industry connections made at Patriots as a school as well as classroom connections.
